USE: The ingestion of alcohol/drugs without the experience of any negative consequences.

MISUSE: Experiencing negative consequences from the use of alcohol/drugs (minor or major).

ABUSE: Continued use despite negative consequences.

DEPENDENCE: As defined in the DSM-IV is a pathological, progressive and chronic process, coupled with a compulsion and obsession to obtain alcohol and/or drugs. Loss of control over use or alcohol and/or drug induced behavior. Continued use despite consequences. Also charatorized by development of tolerance and dependency.

TOLERANCE: Increasing doses needed to produce same effect.

WITHRAWAL: Effects that occur when use of alcohol and/or drugs stops.
